Juaboso District Distributes 10,000 Chickens to Boost Livelihoods and Nutrition

The Juaboso District Assembly, under the leadership of the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Alexander Adu-Quist, has distributed 10,000 chickens to residents under the Government’s Backyard Poultry for Nutrition and Livelihoods Programme, popularly known as “Nkoko Nketenkete.”

The distribution exercise took place on Tuesday, 7th April 2026, at Mafia, a suburb of Juaboso, and formed part of a nationwide initiative aimed at improving household nutrition, generating income, and strengthening local poultry production.

The programme is designed to empower households, particularly women and youth, to engage in small-scale poultry farming, thereby enhancing food security, reducing dependence on imported poultry products, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Adu-Quist reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting government interventions that directly impact the socio-economic well-being of residents.

The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Kwabena Sarfo, assured beneficiaries of continuous technical support, guidance, and extension services to ensure successful poultry rearing. He encouraged participants to take the initiative seriously, noting that farmers who demonstrate commitment and growth in their poultry stock may be considered for future support.

A seasoned poultry farmer, Mr. Kesse Samuel Kingsford, also provided practical guidance to beneficiaries. He advised that the birds should be carefully managed upon arrival, including the provision of glucose in drinking water to reduce stress from transportation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining clean and adequate water supply, warning that poor water management could lead to high mortality.

He further noted that many underestimate the economic value of poultry farming, stressing that, when properly managed, it can serve as a reliable source of income and financial stability.

Also present at the event were veterinary officers, Assembly Members, and other stakeholders who supported the distribution exercise.

The initiative reflects the Government of Ghana’s broader agenda to eradicate hunger, create employment opportunities, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the country.
